Music And Cities: Manchester

Manchester is home to some of the city´s most well-respected and loved music venues which attract events from across the world.

Manchester has consistently been one of the UK´s most creative cities and today begins to rival London in its creative pull. The city is home to some of the most well-respected and loved music venues which attract events and artists from across the world.

Manchester has a strong musical heritage: the city´s now renowned music scene developed in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s with a strong focus on alternative and psychedelic rock. It has been, and still is, home to some of the world´s most famous and well-respected rock bands, including Oasis, The Smiths, Ting Tings and Joy Division. Many of the world’s most famous bands were also discovered here including the Sex Pistols. Its most successful venues and production companies remain in the city today and its rock music scene continues to thrive.

Mali and Tom packed their bags and headed north to get to the bottom of the question: What is it that makes Manchester so attractive in the rock music scene? They teamed up with Manchester based artists, including Blossoms and No Hot Ashes to find out how their city has influenced the music that they create. The couple also met with local urbanists such as Ruth Daniel and Tom Bloxham to learn how the city’s interesting spaces, including old industrial warehouses, have given young creatives the flexibility to create new sounds and network with other musicians in their scene.
